The Complete Metalsmith
by Tim McCreight
A jewellery making cult classic! Even today, this book gets referred to often. The information is laid out in a logical manner, with crystal clear explanations and solid overviews of almost every metalsmithing technique you’ve ever heard of. From chain making, to cuttlefish casting, to stone setting, the book provides a fabulous introduction to the techniques you need to know.
Professional Jewelry Making
by Alan Revere
Another absolute classic. This phenomenal book focuses strongly on project-based learning after a solid 50-page introduction to the tools and techniques you’ll need to get up and running. Starting with a simple forged bangle and finishing with a cluster set ring, each tutorial is accompanied by step-by-step photographs to fully explain the process. There really is something in this book for everyone.
Secrets of the Gem Trade
by Richard W Wise
If you’re interested in learning more about gemstones and enjoying a great read to boot, then this book is an amazing place to start.
A word of warning, gemstones are addictive! As one of my first ever books on gemmology, this was the gateway drug that finally led to getting my GG and FGA!
The Jewelry Workshop Safety Report
by Charles J. Lewton-Brain
All I will say on this: JUST BUY IT! It really is an invaluable resource when it comes to working safely in the studio.
The information in here is clearly well-researched and not simply parroted advice.
Creative Stonesetting
by John Cogswell
Perhaps not as well-known as Revere and McCreight, but Creative Stone Setting by John Cogswell is another firm classic in my view. The book is ram-packed with stone setting techniques together with stunning photography and clear explanations. It was one of the first setting books I ever bought, and it has remained a firm favorite ever since.
Introduction to Precious Metals
by Mark Grimwade
Depending on your attention span, you’ll probably love or hate this book. I’ll be honest, it’s a hard read. But it’s an incredible deep dive into the whats and the whys of working with metal. It’s not a project book, and it’s not full of pretty pictures – it’s just ram-packed with technical information on precious metals. A fantastic reference book for referring back to over and over again.
Mastering Contemporary Jewelry Design
by Loretta Lam
A delightful insight into the detail world of jewelry design. This book can be read over and over – you’ll learn something new each time! If you are like me and believe the design is in the details, this book is going to blow your mind!
I love it so much, I bought a copy each for my entire team!
Gemstone Settings
by Anastasia Young
A creative and inspiring book for anyone looking to take their stone setting skills to the next level. It’s packed full of instructions together with inspiring images to really get your creative juices flowing!
