Bezel setting - there's just so many options!
Bezel setting – the perfect place to start your stone setting journey. Being one of the oldest setting styles, thankfully it’s relatively straightforward as long as you follow a few simple rules and start at the beginning. We’ll show you the basics, but rest assured, we’ll also be sharing tips and tricks along to way to ensure your setting skills are top notch every time. And of course, we cover a variety of styles too from setting for cabochons, to setting round brilliants, and fancy shapes such as oval brilliants and princess cuts.

Graver practice
If you want a really crisp finish to heavier bezels, graver practice is imperative. Before going at your beautiful settings with a graver though, cut out a few shapes in copper and try to use the graver there first. Don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of help with gravers over at the Metalsmith Academy. We’ll show you how to shape and sharpen them, as well as how to use them to get the crispest finish to your bezels!
Using a setting punch
Whether you prefer to set heavy bezels with a hammer handpiece or a hammer and punch, having full control is key. If you look at my middle finger in the image above, you can see it’s in contact with the punch and the bezel. Holding the punch this way assists with control, and of course, helps to ensure you’re using the punch on the setting, not the stone. FYI, hitting the stone with the punch is not recommended if you want your stone in one piece.
These images aren’t from our class videos, they’re from the 40 to 80 page full-colour instructional guides that go along with every class. Our classes are created to ensure no matter how you learn best, we’ve got you covered!
